New Group Practice

The Cortes Health Centre was one of the first rural clinics to operate as a group practice with several physicians sharing one practice. This has been successful here for several year and we are pleased to welcome a new group of physicians to jointly sign an annual contract to deliver General Practice health services at our clinic.

Group Physician Practice at the Cortes Health Centre The Cortes Physician Practice Group share responsibility for patient care and clinical practice, and ensuring that a doctor is always available during Health Centre hours.

Meet our Group Practice Doctors & Nurses

Dr. Janet McKeown

I have been a locum at the Cortes medical clinic since April 2023, with a memorable first windy and wet week, and have been thoroughly enjoying my locum work and the island since.

I graduated from University of Toronto medical school and the London’s Western University family medicine residency program. I have been a family physician in London Ontario, Oceanside California, Durham North Carolina, the UBC Heath Clinic in Vancouver and recently, a few Gulf Islands. I enjoy full service primary care with a particular interest in musculoskeletal health and caring for those who are marginalized.

When I’m not working, you will find me on my sailboat, biking and enjoying time with family and friends on and around Cortes Island.

I look forward to my continued work with the Cortes staff and health care team.

I am very thankful for the opportunity to work and adventure on the traditional territory of the Klahoose, Holmalco, and Tla’amin peoples.

Dr. Tim Foggin

Dr. Timothy Foggin began his career as family physician in Montreal and James Bay Region of Quebec, later branching into global health, public health and emergency management. Dr. Foggin co-founded what is now the Asia Pacific division of Teladoc Health International in 2015 and joined the Teladoc Health Canada leadership team as medical director in 2020.  He now leads clinical teams across the country and practices clinically at the Cortes Island Health Centre in British Columbia.

Dr. Foggin is passionate about transforming the healthcare experience for patients and healthcare providers alike through new approaches to practice management. Building partnerships, developing healthcare leaders, focusing attention on the foundations of health (how we eat, move, sleep, stress and socialize) and advancing culturally safe and relationship-based cultures are at the core of his work.

He is Fellow of the College of Family Physicians (FCFP), Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC, Public Health & Preventive Medicine), Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and Diplomate of the American and International Boards of Lifestyle Medicine. He most enjoys working at the interfaces of population health, primary care, health systems innovation, digital health and lifestyle medicine. He and his family live, work and play in British Columbia, Canada.

Dr. Ben Bauer

Ben Bauer is a family physician traveling to the Cortes and Kalahoose Health Centres from the lower Sunshine Coast.  Though he will only be working on the Island intermittently, he’s honoured to be welcomed by the Cortes Island and Klahoose communities.

Isabelle Laplante, RN

Hi, I’m Isabelle Laplante, one of the nurses at the Cortes Health Centre. I have been here for 3 years, and it’s been a pleasure to serve the Cortes Community. I feel I’m always learning with practicing remotely and grateful for the great team of doctors I work with and for furthering my education. The contraception management, STI/pelvic exam and remote nursing certification have been wonderful additions to this ever expanding body of knowledge. Before coming here I had worked mostly in ICU in Campbell River and trained in Ottawa. My first language is french, and I appreciate being and working on the unceded territory of the Klahoose, Homalco and Tliammon First Nations. I love gardening, hiking, sailing, appreciating the simple pleasures of life.

Heather Jansen, RN

Working as an RN at the Cortes Clinic is a great experience. The crew here are very friendly, and putting a lot of energy into serving their community. I am joining the clinic from Read Island but have been on and off Cortes as a visitor, a student, and a worker for the last 50 years.  I feel like Surge Narrows is a sister community to Cortes here in the Salish Sea and it feels great to be able to care for my neighbours.

I have been doing healthcare in various forms for 30 years; from Child and Youth Care, to Herbalism and Massage, to Midwifery, and finally Nursing. In terms of Nursing, I put my time in at the hospital then moved into working in Community Health care, and Indigenous Community Health.  Currently I’m happy to work as a Primary Care RN here at the CCHA and also as a Virtual Care Nurse for Island Health in their Virtual Program.

I enjoy sailing and cruising around this magical coast, gardening, swimming and getting to know people’s stories. We have five kids, mostly all adults now, and I divide my time between homesteading on Read and working for you over here on Cortes.
